  43.     This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  44.     Microsoft Windows 95.

  46.     The drivers support 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in all
  47.     resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.

  111. 3.      Installation
  112.  
  113.     This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  114.     Display Driver for Windows 95.
  115.  
  116.     To install the drivers, start the program SETUP.EXE in this
  117.     directory. The installation assistant will help you to install
  118.     the driver with the control panel.
  119.  
  120. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  121.  
  122.     - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  123.       older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  124.     - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  125.       Information Database.
  126.     - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.

  129. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  130.  
  131.     First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  132.     WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  133.     install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  134.  
  135.     The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  136.     the Windows desktop.
  137.  
  138.     - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  139.       mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  140.     - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  141.     - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  142.       Display Type" will pop up.
  143.     - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  144.       You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  145.     - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and change to
  146.       the WIN95 directory on the ELSAware CD for your WINNER board.
  147.     - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  148.       and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  149.     - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  150.       "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  151.     - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  152.       screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  153.       find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  154.       driver.
  155.     - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  156.       dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  157.       you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  158.       is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  159.       Boards.
  160.     - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  161.       now".

  163.     Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  164.     now".
  165.  
  166.     In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  167.     without rebooting your system.

  281. 5.      Release notes

  283. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  284.  
  285.     The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  286.     file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  287.     mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  288.     distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  289.  
  290.     The following table shows the meaning of this entries:
  291.  
  292.     Section [Settings]
  293.  
  294.     CursorFG/CursorBK
  295.     ColorCursor
  296.  
  297.         With this two entries you can change the color of the
  298.         hardware cursor. The format is:
  299.             CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  300.         at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  301.         the range 00 to FF of the base color components.
  302.         You must specify ColorCursor=1 to make this working!
  303.  
  304.     RefreshRate
  305.         no longer supported!
  306.  
  307.     TI-Snow
  308.         Set this value to 1, if the screen flickers around the
  309.         cursor shape while changing the pattern.
  310.         This switch works only on WINNER 2000PRO/X, -AVI and
  311.         GLoria.
  312.  
  313.     DeviceBitmaps
  314.         Setting this value to 0, the bitmap- cache will be
  315.         disabled
  316.  
  317.     Format555
  318.         Set this value to 1 to force the 5-5-5 color format in
  319.         16BPP modes.

  322.     Section [Hardware]
  323.  
  324.     CursorType
  325.  
  326.         In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  327.         graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  328.         this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  329.         by inserting the line
  330.             CursorType=SW
  331.         in your ELSA.INI file.
  332.         This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  333.  
  334.     Video-RAM base address and size
  335.  
  336.         Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  337.         your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  338.         segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  339.         On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  340.         into the host address space. This increases the
  341.         performance of multimedia applications.
  342.         For example, insert the line
  343.             VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  344.         to map the video RAM at the physical address
  345.         A00000000h.
  346.         Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  347.         main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  348.         size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  349.         graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  350.         your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  351.         PCI 4GB.
  352.         If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  353.         VRAM-Size entry:
  354.           for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  355.               WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  356.             VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  357.           and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  358.           the size of the video memory in bytes.
  359.  
  360.  
  361. 5.2.    DirectDraw support
  362.  
  363.     The display drivers do support DirectDraw, but to use it in an
  364.     application, you must install DirectDraw. The Microsoft
  365.     DirectDraw components are not included in the standard retail
  366.     version of Windows 95.
  367.  
  368.     To install DirectDraw start the program DXSETUP ind the
  369.     directory \ELSAWARE\DDRAW\DIRECTX on the ELSA CD
  370.

  372.  
  373. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  374.  
  375. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  376.  
  377.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  378.     hints on work arounds.
  379.  
  380.  
  381. 6.1     Videomode not available
  382.  
  383.     Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  384.     display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  385.     indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  386.     a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  387.     notification message.
  388.  
  389.  
  390. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  391.  
  392.     On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  393.     32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  394.     very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.
  395.  
  396.  
  397. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  398.  
  399.     Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  400.     a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  401.     cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  402.  
  403.     - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  404.       driver for Windows 95.
  405.     - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  406.       In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  407.       Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  408.       resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  409.  
  410.     or:
  411.     - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  412.       the mouse track.
  413.  
  414.     Hints:
  415.     When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  416.     board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  417.     active.
  418.     With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  419.     drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  420.     the entry "ELSA GmbH Aachen (Germany)".
  421.  
  422.  
  423. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  424.  
  425.     This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  426.     868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  427.     only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  428.     in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  429.         VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  430.         VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  431.  
  432.  
  433. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  434.  
  435.     Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  436.     (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  437.     switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  438.     color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  439.     "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".
  440.  
  441. 6.6     Unknown and PnP-monitors
  442.  
  443.     If you don't have selected a Monitor or you have a PnP (DDC1)
  444.     Monitor, in all graphics modes the default refresh rate is
  445.     60Hz. The DDC case is becaus a bug in Windows DDC support
  446.     You can change to a higher refresh rate with the control panel
  447.     extemsion WINman. WINman, unlike Windows, can evaluate the
  448.     monitor information provaided by DDC exact.
  449.  
  450. 6.7     Cursor corruption
  451.  
  452.     If you see some "snow" araound the cursor shape while changing
  453.     the pattern, insert the line
  454.         TI-Snow=1
  455.     in the section [Settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
  456.     ! This fix slows down the performance of the cursor changing
  457.     ! operations !
  458.  
  459. 6.8     LapLink 7.5 and Remote Control
  460.  
  461.     To use the feature Remote Control, the usage of device bitmaps
  462.     must be disabled. Insert the line DeviceBitmaps=0 in the
  463.     section [Settings] of the file ELSA.INI.
